2 weeks ago I had the blessing to spend one week on the dreamy island of Santorini in Greece! Santorini is a wonderful island with breathtaking views over the caldera and the volcano. It is a unique place of its kind and I enjoyed discovering the villages, the food, the sites and the very kind people.
We stayed at the amazing Grand View Hotel just outside the village of Megalochori, away from the crowds but still just a 10-minute ride from Fira, the capital of the island. The room was clean and spacious, the view was spectacular, the manager helpful and very nice and the food was perfect. It is definitely a place worth recommending!
We visited the archeological site of Akrotiri, which is worth a visit, because of its impressive history and its well-preserved excavations. However I would recommend booking a guide to walk through the site. Of course we did tour through the famous villages of Fira and Oia, the second one being my favorite. They are both filled with live during the evening and it is very pleasant to stroll through the narrow streets while doing some window-shopping. For a more peaceful walk away from the crowds I would recommend the path along the caldera from Imerovigli to Fira, it is breathtaking! We also did take a dip in the water on the beach of Perissa-Perivolos, which is an organized beach with nice small beach cafes and restaurants. Personally I preferred this beach in contrast to the very touristic beach of Kamari, which we did not even bothered staying at. What is definitely a must is the volcano. We took a boat trip with a guide that brought us to the volcano, the “hot waters” and the small island of Thirassia. It also stopped in front of Oia in order to make us enjoy the beautiful and famous sunset, which was indeed amazing! The boat “Thalassa” also offered a small buffet on board – all in all it is a boat trip that I totally recommend doing.
Now of course, while in Greece food is always a must! I love Greek food and on Santorini we found some really good restaurants:
– Psaraki ( above Vlychada Beach): Great view, fresh fish, a good variety of dishes!
– Mama Thera (Firostefani) : Excellent service, great view, very good food and enjoyable atmosphere!
– Metaxi Mas (Exo Gonia) : fame is justified, great service, amazing food!!, cosy atmosphere, nice view, reservation required!
– Lolita (Oia) : best ice-cream of Santorini, lots of flavours
Santorini is an amazing island, a unique place, which amazes thousand of people every year. No matter where you live, this place is worth a visit. Take the time to visit its sites, to take in the magic, to enjoy every minute while sipping on a cocktail and gazing at the deep blue sea.
